Eastern Kentucky senior guard Corey Walden and junior transfer Denzel Richardson each picked up a weekly OVC award this week. Walden picked up the OVC Co-Offensive Player of the Week while Richardson picked up the OVC Newcomer of the Week award.
In his team’s season-opening 76-53 victory over Savannah State, Walden had 20 points, eight steals and five assists. Playing his first game as EKU’s primary point guard, Walden had just three turnovers in 38 minutes of play. His defense fueled a 17-3 run midway through the second half and helped the Colonels put away the Tigers; to spark that run Walden, the reigning OVC Defensive Player of the Year, had a steal and old-fashioned 3-point play followed by a second steal which led to a basket and account for the first five points of that spurt. Walden hit 6-of-12 (50%) field goals and 8-of-9 (88.9%) free throws.
Richardson, a transfer from Pensacola State College, had 11 points and 10 rebounds in his Eastern Kentucky debut, a 76-53 victory over Savannah State. The junior hit 3-of-6 field goals and 1-of-2 3-pointers while also knocking down four free throws. Richardson also added an assist and a steal in 19 minutes off the bench.
