ATLANTA, Ga. – After defeating Western Carolina 31-28 in the season opener, two EKU football players were named ASUN Player of the Week. Running back Da’Joun Hewitt was named Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week, while kicker Patrick Nations was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Hewitt excelled in his Colonel debut as the Purdue transfer carried the ball 22 times for 78 yards and three touchdowns. Making the first start of his collegiate career, the redshirt-freshman averaged 3.5 yards per carry and churned out 39 yards in the fourth quarter to help EKU secure the victory. Hewitt scored on runs of three yards, one yard, and 18 yards.
Nations also had an exceptional debut, converting all four of his extra point attempts and making a 21-yard field goal that gave EKU its final points of the night. The East Carolina transfer also booted four of his six kickoffs for touchbacks.
Along with becoming the first ASUN Offensive Player, Freshman, and Special Teams Player of the Week in conference history, Hewitt and Nations are also the first Colonels to earn conference accolades in the same week since Gavin Bryant and Matthew Jackson were honored as OVC Defensive Player and Specialist of the Week on Oct. 14, 2018.
