RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University graduate student Samuel Abascal has been voted to the 2020 Academic All-District® Men’s Cross Country / Track and Field Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
As a first-team all-district honoree, Abascal will now advance to the Academic All-America® ballot.
Abascal is one of only 11 Division-I men on the District 2 first team, which covers all schools in Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C.
The native of Sancibrian, Cantabria, Spain earned a bachelor’s degree in international business last May. He maintained a 3.60 GPA while working on a master’s degree in business administration this year.
Abascal has put together an impressive career at EKU. He was the 2019 OVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and a two-time NCAA regional qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (2018 and 2019). His personal-best steeplechase time of 8:42.5 ranks fifth all-time at EKU.
He is a two-time OVC gold medalist – the 1,500 meters in 2018 and the steeplechase in 2019.
This past fall, he earned first-team All-OVC cross country honors after finishing third overall at the conference championships. His performance helped the Colonels win their 14th consecutive OVC team title.
To be nominated for Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point-average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution.
