BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University junior distance runner Wade Meddles has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Thursday.

Meddles posted a 13:52.16 in the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational on March 29. That time is the fastest in the OVC by 23 seconds and currently ranks him No. 10 in the NCAA East Region and No. 29 in the country. It was also the fourth-fastest outdoor 5,000 meters time in EKU history.

Meddles was also a member of the EKU distance medley relay team that finished second only to Wisconsin with a time of 9:52.93 at the Sea Ray Relays on April 13. The native of Gardnerville, Nev. scorched the mile anchor leg with a 4:04 split.

A transfer from Azusa Pacific University, Meddles was named a cross country All-American in the fall after finishing 38th at the NCAA Championships in Louisville.

He is the fifth Colonel to be named the OVC Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and the first since Stanley Mugo won it in 2009.

Other winners included Southeast Missouri’s Kevin Farley and Tennessee State’s Royce Dates (Co-Male Field), Eastern Illinois’ Calvin Edwards (Male Freshman), TSU’s Ashontae Jackson (Female Track), EIU’s Jade Riebold (Female Field) and SIUE’s Jessica Oranika (Female Freshman).
