How? We haven't been nearly as impacted by the portal as others.

Portal losses:
Comer
Walker
Jackson
Thomas

Gains:
Wol
Crawford
Kimble
Paul
Martynov
Nussbaum
Andrew's

Meshing into a team is the thing. That part is definitely coaching. This is also a reality we have to live with in the portal era.

I agree, and I'll add that what I was saying was based on the fact that it's incredibly clear to me that we have more talent than most of these teams we're facing. In a basketball talent competition we run Austin Peay off the court. In a basketball game, we take ten minute stretches off from executing anything and lose.

Everyone is dealing with the portal. You lose players, and you also get players.

And all of these same things were true under AWH before the portal really kicked in. If anything, I think he's really good at working the portal. He's great at putting a team together. They love him. They're loyal to him.

But it's not translating to winning the number of games that we should be winning based on his recruiting/portal success.

We seem to have either one long streak of poor shooting or a couple of 3-4 minute ones each game. Last night was the first 8 minutes where we were 1-16 at the under 12. The rest of the game we shot 45%

To go along with that look at Coach Todd with the ladies. He has relied heavily on the portal at least since day 1 at EKU and has had more success than Hamilton one could argue.

This is a little bit of a deviation from the main point of the thread, but I'd argue that in terms of competitiveness across the college basketball landscape the portal encourages parity. It's often looked at as a negative or mid-major programs because we do have to live through the pain of watching players like Wendell Green, Tre King, Leland Walker , and Tayshawn Comer walk out the door. But we also have access to a lot of talent we didn't before as well. There aren't, effectively, more spots on a team, and a lot of guys that were previously "stuck" sitting the bench at a high-major school or playing beneath their ability in D2 can get to a place that makes sense.

You can construct some really nice rosters that way if you know what you're doing, and I'd argue that AWH has done so. I like the players that we have, and I think they love playing for him. I'm not wishing him out the door by any stretch. He's been a tremendous energizer for our university. But I don't think I'm the only one who gets the feeling that we could be winning more than we are with the rosters we have had over the past few seasons.

Even last year's team, that won our first regular season title since four years before I was born, was pretty bad before conference play began, and never won another game after they clinched the title with two regular season games left. I guess I'm belaboring the point, but it's just perplexing to watch.
