True story.

Also, I realize this thread is getting way off topic, but I'm the kind of person that always keeps a list in my mind of possible places to look for a future head coach. I hope AWH is here for quite a while (and I think he will be here at least a few more years), but at some point down the road I'd take a hard look at former McHale staffer Reece Gaines if he hasn't gotten his shot yet. He's now an assistant coach in the G-League.

I'm not saying it was all his fault, but the only years we did not make an OVC tournament since the early 2000s was when Reece Gaines was on our staff. To me the Dan McHale era is just slightly one step up the ladder from the Scott Perry era. I'd be okay if we never bring back anyone connected to him or his staff.

Amen. He made us better defensively, but not a complete team.

You could also correctly say, "The only years since the early 2000s that we didn't make the OVC tournament was when Nick Mayo was on our team." I'd rather not go back to anything connected to Nick Mayo."

I'm just saying...the "connected to" game can cause you to overlook some great people. In fact, the whole reason they kept Gaines on for a years of the Hamilton era is that Mayo had such a good relationship with him.

I'll admit that I have a particular affinity for Gaines with him having been one of my favorite players in my younger days. So many people forget the battles that He and Dwayne Wade had in Louisville vs. Marquette battles back in C-USA. They were basically considered roughly equals at that time. Injuries derailed Reece's NBA career seemigly before it ever got the chance to really start (he was the 15th pick in the draft by Orlando).

I really do think he'd be a great recruiter with some real ties to the pro basketball world that kids would be drawn to. And to go along with another thread on this board, it would be a nice bonus that he's get us some coverage in the Louisville media. He's also a former Bellarmine staffer so he has multiple connections to the ASUN now.
