Only two years? If I had anything to say about it I would have given AW a 20 year extension. I’ve never seen this kind of player excitement, coaching enthusiasm, and total immersion into the EKU community by a coach, not to mention his recruiting genius.

The article states "this extension will keep the 2020 Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year in Richmond through at least the 2023-24 season", but I would rather he be locked into EKU through at least the 2040 season. – at a minimum.

2 years or 20 years doesn't matter. If he wants to leave, he's going to leave.

Yep – that’s true – I just wanted to express my thankfulness for what AW has done.

Yeah. I know. The real world problems of being a mid major. :)

There’s like a 4 year max for contracts for state employees iirc.

Chris Mack has a seven-year deal at Louisville, and Cal has a lifetime deal. Mack's deal automatically adds a year if and when Louisville gets a post-season ban for the Adidas scandal.

I'm thinking Scott Satterfield's initial deal was for five years, but I'm not 100% certain on that one.

None of them work for the state. They all work for Athletic Associations. That's how the power 5 schools get around state regulated hiring practices.

So, how would that work? The University pays the Athletic Associations who then pass the money to the coaches?

That's a pretty common misunderstanding of the situation:

1. UK's AA disbanded in 2012. It no longer exists.
2. U of L's does still exist currently, but they've toyed with the same idea.
3. Both Mack and Cal (and Satterfield for that matter) can be looked up on the directory of state employees (I just did it).

So it doesn't actually work quite like that at present, but even if it did there would be nothing at all stopping us from creating some nominal board to chair an Athletic Association and awarding whatever contract we wanted to as well.
