Agree. It’s because of OVC dollars (from basketball revenue) that both have home games. The OVC subsidizes members’ playoff bids.
I had no idea the OVC kept NCAA basketball tourney money instead of distributing it to the members to use as they see fit. I’ve obviously been wrong on this. I guess if you don’t fund football ala Belmont or SIUe you’re screwed. Why don’t they use FCS playoffs dollars (hint: they don’t exist you have to buy a trophy but I digress badly)?? Please tell us more about this big secret.

PS with crowds of only 3500 and 3200 at our two playoff home games I can’t help but wonder if both schools couldn’t have better used that cash elsewhere, like assuring they don’t finish in the bottom half of D1 basketball this year. Oh well.

NCAA basketball tourney money is divided into “shares.” League office gets a share, each team in the conference gets a share, and the participating team(s) get two shares. It compounds with each game won.

NCAA tournament money, especially the basketball tournament money which the conference gets a share of the total amount provided to the conference based on teams in and the payment based on rounds participated in. So for instance, the NCAA will be paying the conference at least $6.77 million from the Belmont and Murray St participation in the NCAA tournament and both winning a first round game thus upping the shares to the conference. First payment on that starts next year with a $1.1 million payment.

OVC ESPN deal is another source of revenue.

Not sure on what the members have voted on for distribution rules.

As a comparison, the SEC distributed $46 million per school (with a share to the SEC offices) in the FY ending June 30.

And that’s why the Power 5 wants to preserve the status quo.

Making the OVC and their better recruiting classes than ours look good.
