EKU Football Adds 19 Signees to the Colonel Program

Feb 5, 2014 | Football

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University head football coach Dean Hood announced today that 19 student-athletes will join the Colonel program beginning this spring and next fall. The focus of the 2014 class was along the trenches as nine of the 19 signees are either linemen or tight ends.

The class includes five offensive linemen, four defensive backs, two defensive linemen, two tight ends, two wide receivers, one athlete, one running back, one quarterback and one punter. The 2014 signing class features three players from the Commonwealth of Kentucky as well as players from six other states and Australia.

“The Commonwealth of Kentucky drives everything for us in recruiting,” Hood said. “If there is enough talent here, that’s where we start. When the talent pool isn’t big enough or good enough, we have to expand to the surrounding states. We’ve got a lot of good connections in Florida and that’s where we found a healthy portion of our signing class this year.”

Colonel fans are invited to Gillum’s Sports Lounge in the Richmond Mall for lunch tomorrow, Feb. 6 to listen to Hood’s thoughts on the 2014 signing class. The luncheon is scheduled to start at noon and will also include video highlights of all of the signees.

“There is no question we addressed our needs,” Hood said. “You don’t always get everyone you want, but sometimes you get a big surprise.”

Eastern Kentucky finished the 2013 campaign with a 6-6 overall record and 4-4 mark in OVC play. Following the season, five players were named to the All-OVC team while wide receiver Devin Borders claimed OVC Freshman of the Year honors.

EKU kicks off the 2014 schedule with a Thursday night road contest at Robert Morris on Aug. 28. The Colonels have won a record 21 OVC titles and reached the FCS playoffs 20 times, second most of any program in the nation.

Fans can reserve 2014 season tickets by contacting the EKU athletics ticket office at 859-622-2122.
