
Colonels capture three of the ASUN Football weekly honors
RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky sophomore defensive back Davion Ross was named as the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week, while junior punter Phillip Richards earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors and freshman running back Da’Joun Hewitt was tabbed as the Freshman of the Week, following their performances in the Colonels’ 35-27 victory over Austin Peay on Saturday.
Ross returned an interception for a touchdown and posted a career-high seven tackles while breaking up three passes. Saturday marked his second straight game with a defensive touchdowns after he returned an interception for a score against Indiana State last week. This is the first weekly defensive conference honor for the Perry, Ga., native. He was named the College Sports Madness ASUN Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday.
Richards averaged 42.2 yards per punt and pinned Austin Peay inside the 20-yard line twice. The Mount Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, native also launched a 50-yard and 55-yard punt on the day, making it his second career game with multiple punts of at least 50 yards.
Hewitt rumbled for 103 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. The Nashville, Tenn., native is the first Colonel to earn multiple conference Freshman of the Week honors since Dy’Shawn Mobley in 2014. Hewitt ranks second in the ASUN with 218 rushing yards and is tied for the league lead with five rushing touchdowns.
EKU has now won three different conference weekly awards in two different weeks this season.
