Softball Rolls to Four Victories Over The Weekend

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team played a set of four games this weekend, hosting Asbury and St. Catharine on Saturday, and Georgetown in a doubleheader on Sunday. EKU easily won all four games to improve to 5-1 overall this fall.

In Saturday’s opener, the Colonels were hot at the plate on the way to a 16-0 win over the Eagles. Offensive standouts during the game were freshman Sarah Jackson, freshman Johnkyria Alston and redshirt season Shannon McQueen, who produced seven of the nine RBIs. Pitchers Hayley Flynn, Tory Stewart and Alex Sallberg combined for a five-inning no-hitter.

Eastern rolled to a 9-1 victory over St. Catharine in game two Saturday. Jackson piled up three more hits and another RBI while junior Sarah Fobbs blasted a first-inning, two-run home run.

On Sunday, the Colonels trumped Georgetown in a two-game series, winning game one, 12-2, and game two, 8-2.

Senior pitcher Leanna Pittsenbarger struck out seven of the 13 batters she faced in game one. Fellow senior Katie Tackett finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double and three RBIs. Fobbs was the key batter in the second game, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

The Colonels conclude their fall schedule this Sunday, Oct. 12 with a home doubleheader against Kentucky. First pitch is slated for noon.
