Lipstick on a Pig

Post by martinhall1966 »

I am a 60 year/'70 graduate Colonel fan. I have seen our storied football program go from greatness to mediocrity while our administration watched RKS stadium literally crumble. That's history, now what? Alumni Coliseum's much needed renovation was more than lipstick. It looks great! I am grateful for the progress. RKS and our football program deserve the same. Stop the lipstick! Facts are facts, RKS is a mess. Call it what it is! Go Colonels!

Just FYI, I've been hearing for quite some time that the master plan for RKS is coming. They don't want to go public with things until after they have the chance to really fully celebrate the finished Baptist Health Arena renovation to maximize the publicity they get out of the improvements. I'm not saying I know a ton of specifics, and the details are probably still being discussed anyway, but I do have a high level of confidence that major improvements are coming there. It's just a little more complicated than the basketball ones since a full rebuild of the large side *may* end up being cheaper than a renovation.

Agree I think plans are being figured out. Problem is, the current home side is a logistics nightmare. Just the demo work will take a substantial amount of time and money. As we all know, it's not just a stadium, there's lots of concrete and from the time built I'd guess asbestos as well. Once you demo and start construction it will take a while. I'm no building expert, but I'd say you are looking at 2 seasons worth of disruption at least. If so, do we try to survive with just the new side and hill for 2 years? Do we try to move games like basketball did, if so where? These are all questions along with many many others that I am glad I'm not making! I think everyone can agree (even on here for once Lol) that something major needs done.

I'm just curious, 66, would you prefer a renovation or rebuild? I've been back and forth many times myself because each one comes with its own set of complexities.

Let me interlope with an option…..build a horseshoe as President Martin intended …..start with building the south end zone tied into the current visitor side …..google Edwards Stadium at Marshall for a larger version….that gives us say 2500 more seats…..then tear down the old stadium and rebuild with a total capacity of 20,000……I was at O’Donnell Hall1966…first two floors houses the football team….lots of good times were had

I like that! And it might provide just enough seats to hold us over while the rest of it happens. I'd guesstimate that you'd have *about* 6,000 seats in that scenario, but you'd also still have the hill which can accommodate a few thousand more. You could probably still host close to 10,000 if you needed to. That's not awful as a temporary situation.
