The Colonel basketball team returns to action against Western Kentucky on Wednesday in Bowling Green

RICHMOND, Ky. – Freshmen Peyton Broughton and Dedric Boyd led the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team to a 99-71 victory over Asbury on Saturday evening at McBrayer Arena.

Broughton – a graduate of North Laurel High School in London, Kentucky – led four Colonels in double figures with a career high 21 points, 16 of which came in the second half. He also added five rebounds and a block.

Boyd, meanwhile, finished with his first career double-double, pouring in 17 points and dishing out 12 assists. His six rebounds left him four boards shy of a triple-double. Boyd’s 12 assists are the most by an EKU player in a single game since November of 2015.

Asbury (4-3) stayed close throughout the first half and pulled to within one, 34-33, when Trenton Thompson knocked down a pair of foul shots with 1:45 on the clock.

EKU (3-3), however, closed the half on a 5-0 run, as a free throw by Boyd sent the Colonels into the break up 39-33.

The Colonels then opened the second half on an 11-3 run as a three-pointer from the corner by junior Nick Mayo made it 50-36 with 17:04 remaining in the game. EKU led by double digits the rest of the way.

Mayo finished with 19 points on the night, to go along with seven rebounds, two assists and a team-best three blocks.

Junior Jackson Davis (eight points, nine rebounds) and sophomore DeAndre Dishman (15 points, nine rebounds) both just missed double-doubles in the rout.

EKU out-rebounded Asbury, 56-36, and outscored the Eagles in the paint, 50-12.

Clif Conley paced Asbury with 18 points, while Will Henderson dished out 11 assists for the Eagles.

Eastern shot only 44.7 percent (34-of-76) from the field and 28 percent (7-of-25) from deep in the game; however, the Colonels delivered another stellar performance from the free throw stripe, going 24-of-27 (89 percent).

EKU returns to action on Wednesday when the Colonels travel to Bowling Green to face in-state rival Western Kentucky. Tip from Diddle Arena is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
