OWENS CROSSROADS, Ala. – EKU’s women’s golf team won its third Ohio Valley Conference Championship in the last four years, beating the field by 18 shots on Wednesday.

Eastern began the day with a 20-shot lead. The team’s final round 301 was good enough to set new OVC Championship records for 54-hole total of 888 and team tournament scoring average at 296.00.

EKU will learn its NCAA Regional destination on Monday during the selection show on the Golf Channel’s Golf Central program from 6 to 7 p.m. ET. The NCAA Regionals will be played May 5-7 in Stanford, California; Bryan, Texas; Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Shoal Creek, Alabama.

The 2016 championship is the fourth for the Eastern Kentucky program, having also won in 1996, 2013 and 2015.

“I’m really proud of what they accomplished today,” Head Coach Mike Whitson said. “This was an outstanding performance by this team, they had a great week of golf.”

The senior class of Anna Gleixner, Becky Sharpe and Rachel Welker have been starters on three OVC Championship teams in their four seasons at EKU. The trio nearly won four conference titles, coming up two shots short in the 2014 OVC Championship.

“It’s pretty special for them to win three championships in four years,” said Whitson. “It’s something I hope they treasure for a long, long time.”

Gleixner tied for second overall with a 54-hole total of 222. Sofie Levin shot a second straight round of 2-over 74 and placed fourth with a total of 223. Freshman Amanda Lindahl (225) closed out with a round of 74 and finished sixth. Welker (229) tied for 12th and Sharpe (234) tied for 20th.

Gleixner and Levin were named to the OVC All-Tournament team.

“It’s a little awkward leading by 20 shots, it throws you off your game a little bit,” Whitson said. “We got out there and got off to a good start though. We started the day with a lot of intensity.”

The event was contested on the par-72, 6,050-yard Highlands Course at Hampton Cove Golf Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Tennessee Tech (906) was second, 18 shots behind EKU. Jacksonville State (911) was third and Morehead State (918) finished fourth.

Austin Peay (925) placed fifth and Murray State (927) was sixth. Belmont (947) finished seventh. SIU Edwardsville (965), Eastern Illinois (1002) and Tennessee State (1072) rounded out the field of 10 teams.

1. Eastern Kentucky 293-294-301 – 888 (+24)
T2. Anna Gleixner 68-74-80 – 222
4. Sofie Levin 75-74-74 – 223

Colonel shortstop Krislyn Campos just misses a base hit by Christian Stokes in the 6th inning. Stoke would eventually be the tying run when Abbey Cheek homered later in the inning to win the game for the Wildcats.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A two-run homer in the home half of the sixth lifted the 12th ranked University of Kentucky Wildcats to a 2-1 win over the EKU softball team Wednesday at John Cropp Stadium.

Following a leadoff single from Christian Stokes in the bottom of the sixth, Abbey Cheek’s two-run long ball gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game on their way to the win.

EKU (27-9, 11-2 OVC) senior pitcher Hayley Flynn held the Wildcats hitless through the first two innings and limited UK to five hits on the day. Flynn finished with five strikeouts in six innings of work. The senior has tallied 39 strikeouts in her last three appearances.

The Colonels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on freshman Hannah Clark’s sixth homer of the season. With two outs, Clark belted the 3-1 count over the wall in left center for the contest’s first run of the game. Clark leads the Colonels in homeruns and is now tied for fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference.

EKU thwarted the UK offense in the bottom of the third. Flynn and the Colonels retired the first two batters of the inning. Back-to-back hits from Kentucky followed by a base on balls from UK’s Maisie Steed loaded the bases for the Wildcats. However, Flynn rang up her third strikeout of the game on a full count with the bases loaded to get out of the jam.

UK threatened once more in the home half of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs. Flynn and the Colonel defense yet again displayed their composure, forcing a fly out at the wall on a 3-2 count that was tracked down by Paige Murphy to end the inning, ending the scoring threat.

Clark finished 1-for-3 and one RBI on the day for EKU.

EKU continues OVC play with a three-game series against Belmont University at Gertrude Hood Field.

The Colonels will host the Bruins in a doubleheader on Saturday which is scheduled for a noon first pitch. The series finale is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – EKU senior Hayley Flynn has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Monday’s selection marks the second time this season Flynn has received the honor.

Flynn was the instrumental for the Colonels over the week, logging a complete game shutout against Northern Kentucky University last week, allowing just two hits from the Norse while striking out nine.

The senior kept her momentum into the weekend, logging her second straight shutout in EKU’s 2-0 victory in game one at Morehead State. She finished with 14 strikeouts in 11 and one-third innings on the mound, while giving up just eight hits for the three-game series at MSU.

Flynn, a native of Chandlersville, Ohio, entered the weekend ranked 12th in the nation in wins. She is ranked 26th nationally and leads the OVC in strikeouts (131).

The Colonels (26-6, 10-0 OVC) will look to continue their undefeated record in the conference on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University.

MOREHEAD, Ky – Eastern Kentucky finished off another OVC series with another sweep. This time the Colonels swept rivals Morehead State with a 2-0 win on Sunday.

Eastern Kentucky (26-6, 10-0 OVC) would get some help from their rivals to light up the scoreboard first. An error by Morehead State would allow Johnkyria Alston to score the first run. Alston would later on drive in the second run of the inning to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead in the second.

Sarah Jackson would get on base by a fielders choice however, once again, Alston would score making it 3-0 in the fourth.

Morehead would cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth.

However, the Colonels would get that run back in the sixth after a Krislyn Campos RBI single.

Alston would strike again in the seventh to give Eastern a 5-2 win after Morehead State tried to mount a seventh inning rally.

EKU returns to the field next Saturday for a doubleheader vs Eastern Illinois.

The game had been dominated by great defense all game until the home run shot from Clark.

Hannah Clark went 6.1 innings striking out five Eagles (17-15 6-3 OVC) and only giving up six hits and two walks. Alex Sallberg would come on and pitch .2 innings in the seventh striking out one Eagle to get her fifth save of the season.

In game two, the EKU bats wasted little time to come alive. EKU would take a 1-0 lead in the second after a Rachel Minogue single scored Johnkyria Alston.
